Liverpool awarded goalie Jose Reina with new contract

seth-edward-oneal.jpgSurely, Liverpool hasn't forgotten the fact that it was Reina who let a fool like Inzaghi score two goals in their Champions League final loss right?

It seems after Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina let AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi score two goals in succession, Liverpool management is willing to give Reina another chance as they extended his contract that will keep him with the big Red English giants until 2012.

The 25-year-old Liverpool goalie signed a five-year deal with the squad following the deals signed by fan favorite Jamie Carragher and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

''I am very happy with this contract. It was always my wish to sign a new deal because this is a good club which is looking forward to a very ambitious and attractive project,'' Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina said.

''The details of the contract were very straightforward. Rick Parry (chief executive) and the American owners (Tom Hicks and George Gillett) made everything easy and in the end it was a good solution for the club and a good solution for me.''

''I spoke with Rafa (Benitez) and his thoughts for the future really excited me. He has ambitions for the team which I want to be part of and I'm sure the other players feel the same.''

Rafa Benitez is the current Liverpool general manager who went berserk during his club's 2-1 loss to AC Milan in the 2007 UEFA Champions League final. In a somewhat bizarre ending to the big fixture in Athens, Greece, the referees decided to end the match with still 45 seconds more to play in extra time.

Liverpool was trailing AC Milan by only a goal then.

''The idea now for all of us is to keep winning matches and to challenge for titles. That's what we'll be looking for from the start of next season. Our fans deserve the league title and that's what we'll be looking for. Seventeen years without winning it is far too long for this club and that's why our biggest target next year has to be the Premiership,'' Jose Reina added.
