Can 2008 French Open champ, Rafael Nadal, win Wimbledon?
It's that time of the year when our clay court king attempts to win something that's not on clay.
And in case you have no idea what I'm talking about, the 2008 Wimbledon championships are almost here after watching Rafael Nadal win at Roland Garros. And just like the past four tournaments in England, Nadal will come in as the last Grand Slam winner looking to win something outside the clay courts.
You see, for the past four years, Rafael Nadal will come in Wimbledon as the reigning French Open champion. Yes, Nadal virtually dominated the clay courts for four straight years now.
And while he has been so dominant on clay, he just can't seem to win this Wimbledon tournament. Otherwise known as the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships, this year's Wimbledon tournament should prove to be yet another test to Nadal if he wants to prove that he is one of the best tennis players there is today.
11-time major champion Bjorn Borg believes Rafael Nadal can beat Roger Federer. After watching the French Open championship match at Roland Garros from a front-row seat, the Swede said, ''if he survives the first couple of rounds this year, I pick him to win Wimbledon.''
Roger Federer, on the other hand, can't wait to face Nadal on grass.
After losing the most lopsided Grand Slam men's final since John McEnroe allowed Jimmy Connors to take only four games at Wimbledon in 1984, Roger Federer spoke about how he wishes he could face Rafael Nadal on grass more often.
There are far more tournaments played on clay than on grass, and there's a strong possibility the rivals will meet on the slicker surface once in 2008, just as they met once at the All England Club in 2006 and 2007, in the Wimbledon final.
For what it's worth, Rafael Nadal has come much closer to beating Roger Federer at Wimbledon than Federer has come to beating Nadal at the French Open. Of course, there's only one way to find out.
