Can Hester carry the Bears over Giant test Sunday?

seth-edward-oneal.jpgStay alive. That's what the Bears are aiming for.

With only five more weeks before the 2007-08 NFL football season heads to the playoffs, the Bears are still hanging on, keeping their campaign alive as they go for at least a wild card playoff berth.

That means, the Chicago Bears HAVE TO win every single game from here on out. That mindset started against the Denver Broncos last Sunday, with Devin Hester virtually carrying his team from what appeared to be the loss that will take 'em out of the playoff chase.

There it was, six more minutes to go and the Denver Broncos had a 14-point lead. Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman was dismal as always, staggering through a three-turnover day while feature back Cedric Benson watched from the sidelines in crutches after getting injured in the first half.

It sure looked gloomy and dark for Chicago as they were six minutes away from elimination from the playoff chase. A loss to Denver that Sunday will virtually take 'em out of the playoff picture.

Luckily, Devin Hester had one heckuva' third quarter, coming up with two touchdown returns that caught the Broncos defense off guard. The Bears knew that was enough to keep them in the game and, as it turned out, it was.

The Broncos made mistakes kicking and punting the ball, trying to NOT let the football fly towards wherever Hester was. The Chicago Bears special teams took advantage as they had more than a few good field positions enough to score two touchdowns in the last six minutes.

Apparently, the ''Devin Hester factor'' was enough, enough for Bears kicker Robbie Gould to kick a 39-yard field goal in overtime to give the Bears the 37-34 victory. Although Hester had nothing to do with Chicago's last three plays, his presence alone on the field was enough to keep the Broncos defense guessing.

Fast forward to this Sunday, when the Chicago Bears host the New York Giants. Can the ''Devin Hester factor'' do it again? The Bears certainly hope so.
