The Bucks don't get it. Yi Jianlian doesn't like Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Bucks just can't seem to make Yi Jianlian sign on that dotted line.
Yep, apparently, after the Milwaukee Bucks drafted the seven-foot Chinese giant Yi Jianlian in the 2007 NBA Draft, Yi's domestic and Chinese handlers are now saying that Yi won't report to the Bucks if they selected him with the No.6 overall pick.
To make matters worse for the Bucks organization, Yi Jianlian is planning to return to Beijing to prepare for two more international tournaments, including a brief tour of Germany. And get this, Yi hasn't even visited Milwaukee yet.
With training camp 12 weeks away, Yi Jianlian's people say that the 19-year-old Chinese giant have no intentions of signing with Milwaukee and is considering to play no NBA basketball at all in the coming season to make himself eligible again to enter the draft in 2008 and hope Milwaukee won't draft him again.
Wha?!? Can Yi Jianlian do that? Well, according to the Chinese, he can. And he will.
''When we drafted him, we knew it wasn't going to be the typical situation,'' Milwaukee Bucks head coach Larry Krystkowiak said while watching Yi struggle to post seven points on 1-for-5 shooting against the Celtics in his summer league finale.
The Chinese national team, led by Yi Jianlian of course, took part in a five-game stint in the NBA Summer League. Yi sucked, BAD. I don't even know why the Bucks still want this Bruce Lee clone.
''I just think, when it's all said and done, he's going to be in a Bucks uniform. And hopefully this will have been a great learning experience for all of us. I think it can be a key in validating the NBA [draft] system,'' coach Krystkowiak added.
Krystkowiak and Bucks general manager Larry Harris were permitted to meet with Yi for about an hour on the eve of summer league play and presented him with a Bucks jersey. They also told him, through the help of an interpreter hired by the Bucks, that there would be an immediate opportunity to earn playing time in Milwaukee.
Now, it certainly looks like Yi Jianlian has no intentions of playing for a godforsaken team like the Milwaukee Bucks and I don't blame him.
