Sonics to Relocate from Seattle to Oklahoma
Yep, we saw this one coming.
As the last days of the Sonics at the KeyArena continue to dwindle down faster than the Miami Heat's chances of having a decent campaign this 2007-08 NBA basketball season, the new Sonics owner has already filed his intent to move the team from Seattle to Oklahoma city.
Clay Bennett, one of the Oklahoma-based owners who bought the Seattle Sonics, has already notified NBA commissioner David Stern of his plans. Bennett originally has until March 1 next year to file for relocation if he wants to have his team play anywhere else besides Seattle, but with him notifying the commish this early, looks like he doesn't want to spend more of his time under the rain.
Bennett watched the Sonics' home opener at the KeyArena, spending most of the second half talking with Hall of Famer Bill Russell, pretending that he knows something about basketball. He seemed impervious to the chants of Sonics fans all chanting, ''Save our Sonics!''
''We notified commissioner [David] Stern that we intend to relocate the Sonics to Oklahoma City if we succeed in the pending litigation with the city, or are able to negotiate an early lease termination, or at the end of the lease term,'' Clay Bennett said in a statement.
The SuperSonics is Seattle's oldest major pro sports franchise with the likes of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp giving Seattle fans a glimpse of how good this team was back in the day.
Apparently, Clay Bennet could care less. Of course, the entire city of Seattle doesn't like these developments one bit. Especially when they now probably have a somewhat brighter outlook of the future with Kevin Durant.
''Mr. Bennett's announcement today is a transparent attempt to alienate the Seattle fan base and follow through on his plan to move the team to Oklahoma City. The deadline for notifying the league of his intent to move is March 1,'' Seattle City Attorney Tom Carr said.
''Making this move now continues the current ownership's insulting behavior toward the Sonics' dedicated fans and the citizens of the city.''
