Will the 84 of Chris Webber Help the Pistons in 313?
Number 84, Chris Webber, finally made his debut with the Detroit Pistons in a losing effort to the Utah Jazz.
Uh oh... Was that a sign of things to come as Michigan's prodigal son made his return at the Palace of Auburn Hills? Well, for what it's worth, Detroit Pistons team president Joe Dumars always wanted C-Webb and now, he finally has him.
About six years ago, Pistons team president Joe Dumars invited free-agent Chris Webber to his home for a meeting. It was there that Webber told Dumars that he had decided to re-sign with the Sacramento Kings.
Dumars, disappointed, ended the meeting with a message.
''I said, 'Well, we're going to win a championship anyway,''' Dumars recalled. That was back in 2004, when the Pistons did win the championship, destroying probably the best lineup the Los Angeles Lakers franchise came up with throughout its existence in NBA Basketball.
But now he's getting what he always wanted, the chance to win one with Webber.
Speaking at a news conference, Webber said he's excited to play in the area where he grew up, attended high school and became a college star at Michigan.
''Honestly, I'm excited about being home in Detroit,'' Webber said. ''But I'm more excited about being on this team. If this was not a good team, it would not be that much fun to be at home if you're playing and not winning.''
''But this team was already great before I got here, and so in no way am I acting like I'm coming in here to be a savior. (Of course not dumbass!) I'm part of a great machine already, and that's the good thing about it.''
Joe Dumars has long coveted Chris Webber... er... I mean Webber's game, his great hands, passing skills, offensive versatility and high basketball IQ. He admitted that Webber, 33, is not the flashy player he once was. But in the Pistons' system, flash counts for little.
Man, I sure hope you're right Joe.
